Today we made ‘Hairy Harry’. We put grass seed and soil in a stocking and then stuck on some eyes. Then we thought about what seeds need to grow. Here are our ideas.
We put water into our jars and found a nice sunny spot in our classroom. Now we need to wait and see what happens.
We have made some extra Hairy Harry’s to test what seeds need. We have put one in the cupboard, left one out of water, and made one with only grass seed. We wonder if they will grow?
Our Wonderings:
1. Will Hairy Harry grow without water?
I think it will grow because it has sun and seeds. (Natasha)
It won’t grow because it doesn’t have water. (Keira)
I think it will grow because it has seeds. (Andrew)
2. Will Hairy Harry grow in the cupboard?
It won’t grow because there is no sun. (Akuac)
I think it will grow because it has seeds. (James)
3. Will Hairy Harry grow without soil?
I think it won’t grow because it doesn’t have soil. (Noah and Jade)
I think it will grow because it has sun and water. (Jacob)

Hi Preps,
I just love the Hairy Harry’s and all the great work that is taking place in Prep S. Well Done.
Mrs Mac
Hi Jacob
The Hairy Harry without soil has grown lots of green hair. I also think that the roots are looking for soil to find food to keep the grass growing. I wonder if the grass will keep growing without any soil? I wonder if it will look the same as your Hairy Harry?

Dear Fiona, Tim and Amber
The Hairy Harry’s have grown some hair. The hair is green. It is getting longer. We think our Hairy Harry’s will need to have their first haircut soon.
Love from Prep S
I noticed today that the “Hairy Harry” that has no soil but has water and sun, has grown some roots on the bottom. I think that the roots are looking for the soil, for its food, so then it can grow hair(shoots).
Jacob
Hi Prep S,
We just looked at your blog for the first time today, it is really good. It is great to see all the work you have already done.
We can’t wait to see the Hairy Harry’s when they have some hair.
From Fiona, Tim & Amber (Keira’s Family)
Hi Ms Tatiana
Our Hairy Harry’s haven’t started growing yet but we hope they start growing soon.
from Andrew and Prep S
Dear Mrs Krebs
We want to learn all about how seeds grow. We love being scientists. When our Hairy Harry’s grow some hair, we will show you some pictures.
from Natasha and Prep S
Hi Mrs Coffa,
They are called Hairy Harry’s because we hope they are going to grow lots of hair.
from Kiera and Prep S
PS They are still bald but hopefully not for long! (Jacob)
Hey everyone,
Awesome Hairy Harrys you have there! They look so squishable.
I can’t wait till you find out which conditions are needed for lots and lots of hair growth.
From Steph
Dear Preps,
I’m glad we only live a few doors down as we can pop in to see how your seeds are sprouting!
Mrs Yore and the Middles
Hi Mrs Gridley and Juniors Jig
We put soil in. We put seeds in. We put water in. We put eyes on and we put them in the sun. When they grow their hair you can come and see them.
from Sienna and Prep S
It looks like your class is having a lot of fun! We recently studied plants, too, and wrote about some fun web resources here.
Best of luck to all your “Hairy Harry”s. You’ll soon find out which ones need more than luck!

Hi Prep K and Mrs Kennedy
I think we will see hair growing in 8 days. (Keira)
I think we will see hair growing in 10 days. (Akuac)
I think we will see hair growing in 8 days as well. (Hedy)
What do you think Prep K?
from your friends in Prep S
Well, there is no way to know except by trying, and it looks like you are doing that. It is good to have the extras to see if you can tell precisely what is needed. It seems to me you are all on the right track. Keep it up, genius scientists!
Mrs. Krebs
Hmmm Preps,
I wonder why you have called them Hairy Harry’s when they look bald to me. Bald Harry’s? Maybe you know something I don’t know?
Good luck.
Hi preps,
I love your hairy harrys.
How did you make them? When they start to grow we would love to come and visit your class.
Great work.
From mrs Gridley and juniors jig
Hi Prep S!
We are all very excited to see what will happen to our Hairy Harrys. How long do you think it will take until we see some ‘hair’?
Love from your firends Prep K and Mrs Kennedy
